WHAT EXACTLY IS A TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE?

For most people, a total solar eclipse is a once (maybe twice) in a lifetime experience.

More than just the passing of the moon in front of the sun — a total solar eclipse creates an eerie, almost dreamlike quality over the places in the path of totality.

Scientifically, it’s pretty simple. The orbit of the Moon just so happens to be passing directly between the Earth and the Sun — but the shadow of this passing is only fully visible from a limited area. In 2024, it just-so-happens to include 13 U.S. states.

The strangely quiet, darker-than-usual sky creates a buzz in the air that is hard to describe. It’s something everyone should experience at least once! And the best way to experience the full beauty of a total solar eclipse is by seeing it from the Path of Totality!

Luckily, we’ve got dozens of great recommendations for you — including great places to view the eclipse, where to stay, where to eat and more.

Why do I need eclipse glasses?

Great question! Looking directly at the sun without eye protection during an eclipse can cause severe and permanent damage to your eyes.

Solar Eclipse Glasses are a cheap, effective way to be able to enjoy view the eclipse fully without damaging your eyes.

It is 100% necessary to use eclipse viewing glasses in order to view the eclipse.

DO NOT attempt to view without ISO-Certified eclipse glasses. Sunglasses are not a substitute and will not protect your eyes from damage.
